Clinical Experience
A supervised clinical experience, consisting of either student teaching or a practicum for teachers who are currently in the field, is provided for students completing their certification programs. Each experience is a full-time, daytime responsibility and includes a weekly seminar at Adelphi University. Specific course prerequisites for student teaching or the practicum vary in each program.
The Department of Curriculum and Instruction will not waive student teaching.

Student Teaching Application
In order to be considered for a student teaching placement or practicum, please submit a student teaching application and the student teaching essay to the Office of School and Community Partnerships, Harvey Hall, Room 111. The application (PDF 56KB) and essay topic (PDF 14KB) can be downloaded and completed on your computer, then printed and returned to the office.
Application Deadlines
Applications are due as follows:
Fall student teaching applications are due December 1.
Spring student teaching applications are due March 1.
The Application Process
- If the student teaching application is not submitted on time, the placement will be delayed for a semester.
- Prospective teacher candidates are required to attend a meeting at the beginning of the semester in which the application is due. At this time they will receive all necessary application materials and details regarding the application process, as well as important information regarding certification and graduation. Teacher candidates will be notified by e-mail of meeting dates and can also find these dates posted in the Education offices of each campus.
- Nonattendance at this meeting is not an acceptable excuse for late applications or ignorance of the issues discussed at the meeting.
- If you know you will be unable to attend the meeting, you must make alternative arrangements to meet with the Director of School and Community Partnerships in a timely manner. Appointments with the Director are made by calling 516.877.4086.

Adelphi Model Initiative
As part of its ongoing commitment to quality teacher education, Adelphi University has developed partnerships with exemplary K-12 schools in Nassau/Suffolk county and New York City. Within a two-semester program, Adelphi candidates have the opportunity to work with experienced teachers to make a seamless transition from class observer to teacher candidate.
Candidates accepted for the Adelphi Model initiative are assigned two experienced teacher mentors and a University liaison who meets with them each week for two semesters. During the fall semester, candidates have the opportunity to observe and participate in classroom activities. Their 16-week student teaching experience begins during the spring semester. Students must have an over-all index of 3.0 to be eligible for the program, complete a writing sample, and engage in an interview as part of the acceptance process. Applications are due March 1st, a semester prior to beginning the program.
