Alpha Upsilon Alpha, the honor society of the International Reading Association, recognizes and promotes scholarship in the field of literacy. It supports professional development among members and encourages them to assume leadership positions in education and related fields. The Beta Theta chapter at Adelphi installed its charter members in fall 2004.

International Honor Society in Education

The goals of the organization are to maintain a high degree of professional fellowship among its members, facilitate their professional growth and honor achievement in educational work. Its members exhibit commendable professional qualities, embrace worthy educational ideals, and pursue exemplary scholarship.

To be considered for membership, undergraduates must have taken more than 50 credits (12 in professional education courses) and have earned a GPA greater than 3.75. Graduates must have full graduate standing at Adelphi, taken more than 12 credits of professional education courses, and have a GPA greater than 3.75. For complete membership requirements, contact the faculty adviser.

Throughout the year, Kappa Delta Pi sponsors activities to support the community, including a charity softball game, walks to raise money for medical research, a canned food drive, lesson plan swap, and a holiday gift drive for children in local hospitals. Kappa Delta Pi's annual induction ceremony is held in May.

Physical Education Honor Fraternity

Phi Epsilon Kappa is a national professional honorary fraternity for students pursuing careers in physical education, health or human performance science. Its objectives include advancing the professional development of its members, encouraging scientific research, recognizing outstanding work in the field and fostering a spirit of fellowship and support. It publishes the Black and Gold bulletin and the Physical Educator magazine.

Adelphi has the distinction of being one of only 43 universities with a Delta-Eta chapter. In both 1987 and 1995, the Delta Eta chapter at Adelphi had the most scholarship award winners of any chapter in the country.

Membership is open to students, faculty and alumni. Student criteria for induction into the fraternity include:
  • 2.8 G.P.A.
  • recommendations from three members
  • pledge for a minimum of one semester

The Majors Club is an organization for students majoring in physical education. It is dedicated to promoting the personal, professional and academic growth of its members by:
  • sponsoring faculty and guest speakers
  • initiating, organizing and assisting in community activities involving physical education
  • offering a forum for student ideas
  • encouraging discussions of issues of interest to physical education students
  • providing an opportunity for social interaction between students and faculty.
The Club is administered by students, under advisement by a faculty representative.

S.T.A.R.S. (Standing Together to Always Reach Students)
S.T.A.R.S—Standing Together to Always Reach Students—is the undergraduate education club whose goal is reflected in its name. Its activities and school-based programs reinforce and reaffirm students’ goals of becoming teachers.

The organization strives to provide a forum for the interplay of ideas and the exchange of opinions. Students can discuss issues that concern their chosen career. S.T.A.R.S. also encourages active participation in local schools to give Adelphi students first-hand experience in identifying the needs of diverse students in the surrounding communities.
