Graduate Admissions

Applications are reviewed by the Physical Education Graduate Committee. All applicants must:

  • submit a formal application to the Adelphi University Graduate Admissions Office
  • show evidence of having completed an appropriate undergraduate course of study with a cumulative GPA of 2.75 or better to become a degree candidate.

Students must indicate on their application their interest in adapted physical education, exercise physiology, or sport management.

Degree Requirements
Students have five years to complete the master’s degree. To be awarded the Master of Arts degree, students must:

  • have a 3.0 GPA
  • submit an evaluation paper
  • contact their adviser or department chairman the semester prior to graduation to request departmental approval
  • complete an application for graduation

Provisional Status
Applicants with a GPA less than 3.0 may apply for admission as provisional students. To attain permanent degree status, students must maintain a B or better average and/or at least three B range grades, with no grades less than a C in the first four core courses.

Students must contact the Department of Health and Physical Education to apply for degree candidacy after having:

  • completed a minimum of 12 credits including:
    • PED 650
    • 6 credits from core courses
    • one or more core courses within their area of specialization

In some cases, students may be required to take a comprehensive examination in the core requirements prior to being admitted as a degree candidate.

Department Policy on Grades
All students must have a 3.0 grade-point average in order to graduate. Any student who receives a grade in the C range will be placed on departmental probation. Three C range grades or an F usually results in dismissal from the program unless the student can demonstrate extenuating circumstances to the Graduate Committee that would allow for a reconsideration of status.

Assistantships
Graduate assistantships are available in exercise physiology, teaching, sport management and health studies. Assistantships provide tuition remission for up to 36 credits.

Contact the director of the specific program for information on applying. For general information, contact Stephen J. Virgilio, Ph.D., chairman, at  516.877.4262 or virgilio@adelphi.edu

Transfer Students
Courses taken up to three years prior to attending Adelphi may be transferred. There is a 6 credit maximum with a minimum grade of B. All course work must be accompanied by course descriptions and an explanation for requesting a transfer.

Retention
All graduate students are periodically evaluated with reference to their academic competency.  Students who receive one or more C's may be placed on departmental probation, which may eventually lead to program termination

The status of any degree candidate or provisional student may be reevaluated following a grade of C or F. In the event that a student’s grades are considered unacceptable to continue in the program, the student may petition the graduate faculty to reconsider the evaluation. The petition must be accepted within two weeks following the rejection notification. The petition should be submitted to the department chairman along with a statement that sets forth the requesting a reevaluation.
