Introduction |
The Scholars Teacher Education Program (STEP) is a unique, five-year combined bachelor's and master's program that integrates field-intensive programs with a strong foundation in the liberal arts and sciences.
It prepares candidates to teach at the childhood (grades 1-6) and adolescent (grades 7-12) levels. Graduates who successfully complete the fifth year of the program are then eligible for New York State Department of Education certification in childhood or adolescent education.
All liberal arts subjects in the College of Arts and Sciences, with the exception of dance, are acceptable majors for STEP. Students may also major in psychology in the Gordon F. Derner Institute of Advanced Psychological Studies. STEP students also take education courses and participate in field-based studies in elementary and secondary schools. After completing their undergraduate degree, STEP students immediately begin a master's degree in childhood or adolescent education. Fifth-year students take a three-semester sequence (summer, fall, and spring) that includes student teaching or an internship to complete all requirements for certification.
Introduced in 1995, the STEP program is both comprehensive and economical. Students in this competitive program stay together as a group throughout the program. From the start, students are assigned faculty advisers to guide them in their course and field work.

STEP Adolescent Education, Grades 7-12

Teaching Certification
At the end of the fifth year, graduates will have completed the requirements for New York State initial teaching certification in elementary school teaching or in secondary subject areas. Students will also be awarded a master's degree in education that meets the requirements for professional certification as specified by the New York State Department of Education. See Student Teaching and Certification for more information.
Students wishing to teach in more than one certification area can discuss dual certification with their adviser and plan their programs accordingly. Students can choose from a variety of teaching specializations that complement the first certification, including special education, literacy, teaching non-native speakers of English, and bilingual education.
Transfer Students
STEP accepts transfer students entering no later than their junior year.
Honors College and Other Special Programs
STEP advisers will assist students enrolled in the Honors College or in other specialized undergraduate programs on planning a course of study that meets all necessary program and certification requirements.
Scholarships and Financial Aid
Students in STEP who receive a University-based, academic scholarship as undergraduates will receive an academic scholarship for their graduate year.
STEP students who were not eligible for a scholarship upon admission to the university as undergraduates will be eligible for a $3,000 Graduate STEP Merit Award in their fifth year if they meet the following criteria:
- entering the graduate year of the STEP program
- no previous scholarship from Adelphi University
- completed 56 or more credits at Adelphi
- cumulative GPA of 3.3 or higher
Eligibility for this award will be determined each year by the Office of Student Financial Services after all grades are posted for the spring semester.
Paid Teaching Internships Fifth-year STEP students can apply for paid teaching internships. Accepted student interns teach in the fall semester and become paid teaching interns the following spring semester. They fulfill a variety of instructional roles at both the elementary and secondary school levels and are supervised by mentor teachers in the school district as well as by a University supervisor. Teaching interns receive course credit for their internships that fulfills their student teaching requirement.
