Communication Sciences & Disorders eNews

CSD E-News Fall 2007
Last spring the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders offered a one-day continuing education program on "Issues and Advances in Academic and Clinical Teaching.” Over 100 professionals attended the workshop including colleagues from our neighboring universities as well as our own faculty, clinical supervisors and doctoral students.  Keynote speakers were Dr. Donna Geffner of St. John's University and Dr. Elaine Geller of Long Island University-Brooklyn. During the day, topics of interest which were addressed included: innovative ways to make classroom teaching more exciting; assessment of student learning in both the academic and clinical setting; and bridging academic learning and clinical practice. Proceedings of the various sessions were compiled and sent to all workshop participants.

Council on Academic Accreditation (CAA) of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) site visit
March 6 & 7, 2008
Adelphi University's MS program in Speech-Language Pathology has been continuously accredited by the CAA since its creation 40 years ago. It is time, once again, for the CAA to review our master's degree porgram in speech-language pathology. Site visitors will be coming to campus on March 6 & 7, 2008. We are confident they will be impressed with Adelphi University and the high quality of our program's academic and clinical curricula, as well as our faculty, supervisors, staff, and most of all, students.

Exciting plans for 2008-2009
We are thrilled to announce our search for a new faculty member to join our department beginning Fall 2008. We are currently interviewing the very best candidates. Stay tuned!

Based on surveys of graduating students, alumni, and employers; feedback from full-time, part-time, and clinical faculty; and interviews with students currently in our MS SLP program, we are planning the following curricular improvements (approval pending):

Beginning in the Fall 2008, we will be adding a second Hy Weinberg Center clinical practicum (internship). That will give our students more hours and more varied experiences prior to placements in their community settings. We will be adding an externship seminar to provide students with additional support in their practica. Lastly, we are planning to introduce a new 1-credit course in autism for SLPs. All of these changes will be made without increasing the number of credits required to graduate as we plan to combine Advanced Audiology and Aural Rehabilitation into a single course.

Anna and Leopold Reich Memorial Scholarship
On May 12, 2008, 80 people gathered to celebrate the first annual Anna and Leopold Reich Memorial Scholarship awards ceremony. This scholarship program was conceived by Communication Sciences & Disorders doctoral student Adele Bodlander in honor of her retirement as a Supervisor at the NYC DOE. Three MS candidates, Atara Stern, Rachel Herz, and Shosana Sendic, received $1000 awards towards tuition and books.

The Robert F. and Augusta Finkelstein Memorial Lecture

The Robert F. and Augusta Finkelstein Memorial Lecture was established by Adelphi University in 1981 in honor of the late Robert F Finkelstein, a noted industrialist and staunch believer in state and federal support of elementary and secondary education. This endowed lecture is provided through the generosity of Mrs. Augusta Finkelstein, a 1928 Adelphi graduate, in memory of her husband. Her goal was "to provide a series of lectures by well-known persons recognized for their commitment to the elementary and secondary public school system." After Mrs. Finkelstein passed away, the lecture was renamed to honor them both.

The Finkelstein Lecturer for Fall 2008 will be Patrick Finn.
