Element 5G: Unit Facilitation of Professional Development
The unit has policies and practices that encourage all professional educational faculty to be continuous learners, in line with the Conceptual Framework. Opportunities which support professional development are available to faculty at the university, unit, and program levels. The paragraphs that follow outline many of these opportunities.
Adelphi University provides financial assistance for faculty members to engage in professional development/renewal, scholarship, and service/leadership. Financial assistance includes the following:
- SOE Funding is available annually to each full time faculty in the College o Education (80% of costs if presenting paper)
- Released Time for Research to faculty who present externally peer-reviewed proposals for approval.
- Internal Grants in Support of Research to faculty researchers whose proposals have been externally peer-reviewed and approved. The amounts granted, although small by the standards of governmental and foundations awards, can exceed $3,000 per year and have been useful in starting up research projects that will later be submitted for external funding
- Graduate Research Assistants to individual departments in the SOE with a University-funded budget for hiring Graduate Assistants.
- Sabbatical Leaves are granted to tenured faculty for purposes of professional growth after each period of seven years full time teaching at the university, and following approval by the Faculty Committee on Retention, Tenure and Promotion, the Chief Academic Officer, and Board of Trustees. Leaves are awarded either for a full year at half pay or for a half year at full pay. In additional to financial assistance for professional development, the university sponsors several professional renewal opportunities. The on-campus program stress teaching effectiveness, assessment/evaluation, and technology in education. University-sponsored program include the following:
- The Faculty Center for Professional Excellence (FCPE) offers workshops designed to train faculty in the continuously developing opportunities for uses of technology in education.
- Reductions in Workload for New Faculty: new faculty are, when possible, given reduced teaching and advising loads during their first semester of work.
- One-on-One Mentoring Program includes tutelage for new faculty in the possible outlets for service to departments, schools, and the university as a whole. The Dean of the SOE appoints an experienced faculty member to serve as a mentor to new faculty at the time of hire.
- Mentoring by the Peer Review Committee is also a source of mentorship to new faculty. The committee organizes yearly workshops on portfolio development by recently tenured faculty and provides a forum for discussion on the tenure process.
- Junior Faculty Meetings: The Office of the Provost sponsors periodically scheduled meetings of junior (i.e., untenured) faculty for the purposes of reviewing requirements for tenure, especially with regard to methods for achieving prerequisite goals in scholarship, teaching and service.
- Adjunct Faculty Meetings: The Dean of the SOE sponsors meetings of adjunct faculty to inform and update part-time teachers about changes in curriculum, assessment procedures, and the relevance of the conceptual framework to their course planning and execution.
