Standard 3: Field Experience and Clinical Practice

The unit and its school partners design, implement, and evaluate field experiences and clinical practice so that teacher candidates and other school personnel develop and demonstrate the knowledge, skills and dispositions necessary to help all students learn.

Overview
The Ruth S. Ammon School of Education's programs are largely organized around the field and clinical experiences for candidates; the Conceptual Framework is an integral component of all field experiences in every program. Courses related to fieldwork are aligned with the Framework, as is evident in course syllabi (Exhibit S3-1).  All undergraduate and graduate level candidates in initial and advanced programs participate in field experiences and clinical practice, the length and time requirements vary between programs but always exceed state regulations and SPA guidelines. These experiences are viewed by the unit as the most meaningful way for candidates to apply content and pedagogical knowledge, practice professional skills to enhance student learning and to demonstrate professional dispositions. Candidates are assessed in multiple experiences and are expected to demonstrate knowledge, skills and dispositions necessary to help students learn in diverse settings. The Participant Observer Handbook and the Teacher Candidate Handbook addressing these expectations are offered as Exhibit S3-2 and S3-3

Table 3-1 provides a summary of specific program requirements for field experiences and clinical practice for initial certification.
