The undergraduate and graduate programs in physical education prepare professionals to teach and promote fitness and wellness that enhance the quality of life at every age. Through a multi-disciplinary approach, students gain the skills necessary to work with individuals and diverse groups in a variety of settings that includes schools, community health centers, recreation centers, and office environments.
Students learn to use exercise, sport, games, and dance to develop age-appropriate programs for children, adolescents, adults, and seniors. These programs foster a healthy lifestyle and encourage the development of self-esteem and multi-cultural awareness. The department also offers programs in human performance science that emphasize the role of physical activity in disease prevention and rehabilitation.
The department offers undergraduate and graduate degrees leading to New York State teaching certification. The department also offers dual certification in health and physical education.
Students may also choose to minor in health, sport management, exercise science, or physical education. Each minor requires 18-21 credits in a specific area of study determined in conjunction with the adviser.
Students are encouraged to join the Physical Education Majors Club during their first semester and to take advantage of membership in state, national, and international health-related academic and advocacy organizations.

Physical Education Certificate in Advanced Studies
This certificate program requires 15 credits beyond the master’s degree. Six credits must me in approved advanced courses.
Pre-Physical Therapy/Allied Health
The requirements for this program include all foundation and elective courses from Exercise Science. The additional electives should include coursework in the basic sciences such as biology, chemistry, and physics. Statistics and/or calculus may also be required.
Joint Degree Program in Physical Therapy
Adelphi University and the New York College Medical School of Health Sciences in Valhalla, New York offer a combined seven-year Bachelor of Science/Doctor of Physical Therapy.

Adult Fitness Programs
To promote a healthy lifestyle at any age, Adelphi offers a range of adult fitness programs under the supervision of staff members certified by the American College of Sports Medicine.
