The Physical Education Department promotes an environment in which each student is an active participant in the educational process. To realize this endeavor, all students are required to submit a position paper and study plan within the first twelve credits of their program and then an evaluation paper prior to graduation. These individualized papers take into account each student’s goals and give them the opportunity to evaluate their educational experience in terms of those unique goals.
Within the first 12 credits, 6 credits must be taken from the specialization core courses.
PED 650 Research Methods should be taken as an early course. The study plan and position paper are required at the completion of the course.
Study Plan Guidelines
The study plan is determined in conjunction with the student’s adviser and takes into account the student’s academic goals and professional objectives. Students should follow the study plan as closely as possible. Any significant change must be accompanied by the adviser’s approval in writing.
Evaluation Paper Guidelines
The end paper provides the student with the opportunity to examine the Adelphi educational experience. It must be presented to the adviser and the department prior to graduation.
The paper is to be approximately 3-10 typed pages and should include:
- critical self evaluation in relation to achieving stated goals and/or changes in self-knowledge, attitudes, etc.
- future expectations and how the student intends to use his/her education
- evaluation of the Adelphi experience, both of the program and the University
- recommendations for courses and programs
- analysis of strengths and weakness of the program.
Master's Thesis
Students who pursue a research orientation are encouraged to complete a Master's thesis. The thesis project is designed to be an educational experience that allows the student to demonstrate research skills and critical thinking. Upon entering the program, students should discuss their personal research interests with their academic adviser.
Degree Requirements
Students have five years to complete the master’s degree. To be awarded the Master of Arts degree, students must:
- have a 3.0 GPA
- submit an evaluation paper
