Faculty Master of Arts in Physical Education leading to New York State certification (GATE)

GATE—Graduate Alternative Teacher Education Program—provides an alternative track for both initial and professional certification. Students without prior certification in physical education may enter the program.

GATE requires 60 to 66 credits to complete, depending on the student’s prior course work. The plan of study includes a specialization core and education foundation courses. Students will be expected to participate in student teaching.

Prior to student teaching, students must obtain a C- or better in all courses and have a 3.0 GPA. They also must complete: 
  • All coursework except PED 505 (Professional Seminar)
  • Language and literacy coursework
  • Workshops and seminars
  • State exams (LAST, ATS-W, CST)

Student Teaching
To qualify for admission to Student Teaching, students must:
  1. Complete all Core Content and Educational Foundations coursework earning a grade of C-or higher
    (PED 505 Professional Seminar may be taken during the student teaching semester).
  2. Maintain a grade point average of 3.0 or higher in overall graduate course work.
  3. Register for all three State Certification exams, submit fingerprints, and complete literacy and all state required seminars.
  4. Submit a completed Student Teaching Application form to the Department Student Teaching Coordinator by October 15 for the following spring semester, or by March 15 for the following fall semester. Application forms may be obtained in the Physical Education Office or by contacting the Department Student Teaching coordinator.
