Faculty Master of Arts in Exercise Science and Sport Managment — Exercise Physiology

The Department of Health Studies, Physical Education, and Human Performance Science offers graduate programs leading to a Master of Arts Degree in Exercise Physiology and Sports Management. Specialized tracks include: Exercise Physiology or Sports Management. The program is designed to prepare students to work with a wide variety of populations including high level and recreational athletes as well as people who are diagnosed with cardiovascular, pulmonary, neurological, orthopedic and metabolic problems. 

Graduates of the Exercise Physiology program go on to careers in Clinical Exercise Physiology, Cardiac Rehabilitation, Personal Training and Strength and Conditioning. Some pursue doctoral degrees in Allied Health, Medical School, and Exercise Physiology.

Candidates for admission to the Exercise Physiology Program must possess a four year undergraduate degree and have completed the following pre-requisite courses: Human Anatomy and Physiology, Exercise Physiology, and Kinesiology. An interview may be required. The program is 36 credits and may be take on a full-time or part-time basis. Learning objectives for the American College of Sports Medicine Registered Clinical Exercise Physiologist are included in the course work. Degree candidates must maintain a minimum of a 3.0 GPA.

Clinical Exercise Physiologist – this unique curriculum focuses on the role of exercise in the treatment of cardiovascular, pulmonary, metabolic, musculo-skeletal, neuromuscular and immunologic disease with in special populations including the elderly or sensory impaired. This area of study prepares students for the ACSM National Registry Examination.

Health Fitness Specialist – this curriculum focuses on exercise applications for healthy controlled disease, symptomatic and athletic populations. Students can go on to careers in corporate wellness, health enhancement, sport-specific training, or personal training. 

Sport Medicine/Athletic Training – the curriculum includes the prevention and treatment of athletic injuries and prepares students for the National Athletic Training Association (NATA) Examination.

School-based Fitness Specialist – the curriculum helps coaches and teachers integrate advances in fitness, sports performance, and wellness into their programs. A 21-credit certificate program is offered for teachers who do not intend to pursue a Master’s degree.

Cardiac Rehabilitation Specialist – the curriculum helps develop clinical skills and the on-site cardiac rehabilitation programs offer opportunities for students to work with more than 200 patients per week.

The plan of study for this 36-credit program includes laboratory and lecture-based classes and culminates in a supervised field based internship (PDF 9KB). The strong academic program is supported by the on-site Adult Fitness/Cardiac Rehab Program and an active Human Performance Research Laboratory which provide the student with practical, hands-on experience. Students will work with diverse populations from athletes to people in various stages of illness.

All students are required to complete a research project eligible for publication.

Graduate assistantships are available on a competitive basis to qualified individuals.
