The department offers a course of study leading to an M.A degree in physical education with a specialization in adapted physical education. Based on prior certification in K12 physical education, the 36 credit program is designed to prepare teachers as specialists in adapted physical education and to work with students with disabilities in a variety of school-based environments. Additional coursework may be necessary for those entering the program without certification in physical education. Graduates of the program will receive an M.A. degree in physical education with a certificate of specialization in adapted physical education. Students with a master’s degree in physical education may wish to obtain the certificate of specialization without pursuing another degree. In this case, the student is required to complete the specialization requirements (minimum 18-21 credits).
Graduates of the program receive an M.A. degree in physical education with a certificate of specialization in adapted physical education. Students who already have an M.A. in physical education may obtain the certificate of specialization. The certificate requires a minimum of 15 credits.
Entrance Requirements
It is suggested that students entering the program have a minimum 3.0 GPA. All students are required to submit a position paper or plan of study within the first 12 credits. Prior to registering for courses each semester, all students enrolled in the program must contact Associate Professor Ellen Marie Kowalski at 516.877.4265 or by email at kowalski@adelphi.edu

The selected field experience and schedule will be identified by the program adviser.
Program Requirements
- Students are also required to serve an internship.
- The final project must incorporate students with disabilities.
