Adelphi is the only university on Long Island to offer the Master of Arts (M.A.) in Physical Education with a specialization in adapted physical education. This program prepares teachers to work with mentally and/or physically challenged students in a variety of school and activity-based environments.

The program is designed for teachers with prior K-12 certification in physical education. Those entering the program without this certification may be required to take additional courses to meet the program requirements.

This plan of study for this 36-credit course includes:

Required Physical Education core 12 credits
Adapted Physical Education core 18 credits
Electives 6 credits

Some electives may require prior approval.

Graduates of the program receive an M.A. degree in physical education with a certificate of specialization in adapted physical education. Students who already have an M.A. in physical education may obtain the certificate of specialization. The certificate requires a minimum of 15 credits.
