Please Note:
Effective, Monday, May 12, the Adult Fitness Program will close for relocation. The program will reopen in June, at a date to be determined. The new, but temporary location will be on the mezzanine of the lobby in the new Sports and Recreation Building located right next to Woodruff Hall. The Adult Fitness Program is scheduled to move back to renovated, modernized Woodruff Hall in January 2010. All Fitness Evaluations will take place in Post Hall at the location of our temporary staff offices.

The benefits of exercise can last a lifetime. Adelphi's Adult Fitness Program offers an innovative approach with individually tailored exercise programs, nutrition counseling, and recreational activities. Participants have use of recreation facilities and state of the art exercise equipment.
A team that includes exercise physiologists and staff members certified by the American College of Sports Medicine performs comprehensive fitness evaluations and develops individualized programs. Participants are motivated to achieve their fitness goals as they learn how to exercise properly, efficiently, and safely.
Memberships are available on a limited basis to University faculty, staff, students, and other adults in neighboring communities. All participants must be over the age of 18. Entry into the program is contingent upon the approval of the individual's personal physician. A physician's clearance form must be submitted in order to participate in the exercise program.
To obtain all of the necessary forms you will need to complete prior to joining the program, you may download the materials below or call the Adult Fitness office at 516.877.4275 to have the forms faxed or mailed to you.

2. Complete and submit the following required forms:
Eligible program participants:
- Individuals with no apparent health problems
- Individuals at high-risk for heart disease, diabetes, obesity, or hypertension
- Phase III cardiac patientsthose who are clinically stable and who have preferably undergone Phase II (telemetry monitored) cardiac rehabilitation
Facilities:
- Men's and women's locker rooms and showers
- Indoor pool
- Indoor and outdoor running areas
- Squash courts
- Basketball courts
- Strength-training equipment
- Aerobic exercise equipment
Program Offerings:
Comprehensive Fitness Evaluation
- Functional test for aerobic capacity includes exercise electrocardiogram and blood pressure monitoring
- Pulmonary function analysis
- Body composition assessment
- Tests for musculoskeletal fitness
- Flexibility measurement
- Medical screening
- Risk factor profile
Individualized Exercise Programs
Using guidelines established by the American College of Sports Medicine, the staff designs individualized programs and provides instruction on the proper way to exercise, including frequency, intensity, and duration. They conduct frequent reviews to monitor progress and reassess individual needs.
Supervised Exercise Classes
Participants are taught to monitor their heart rate and control the intensity of exercise. They are encouraged to take part in hour-long sessions that include a group warm-up, cardiovascular activity, resistance training, and a cool-down period. For maximum benefit, participants are urged to attend at least three times a week.
Monthly Fitness-Related Lectures
Participants can hear expert lectures on nutrition, weight-control, stress, and other relevant topics.
Recreational Activities
Members of the Adult Fitness Program are eligible to use Adelphi's recreational facilities during open hours. Facility hours vary by semester.
Nutrition Counseling
Participants receive advice on healthy eating and diet modification based on their need to lose, gain, or maintain weight.
Individual Fitness Evaluation and Home Fit Program ($100.00)
For individuals with busy schedules, the staff can evaluate fitness levels and design personalized exercise programs that can be done at home. This program may not be appropriate for everyone.
