The Department of Health Studies, Physical Education and Human Performance Science offers an undergraduate program leading to a bachelor of science degree and New York State professional certification in teaching physical education. Undergraduate course work in health studies is open to all students and may be required or recommended in a number of majors within the University. The department also offers dual certification in health and physical education. In addition, the department offers non-teaching majors including exercise science with pre-physical therapy and sport management.

Teacher Certification
In addition to the University’s General Education requirements, students majoring in physical education and seeking New York State Teacher Certification must complete 33 credits of Theoretical Foundations, 15 credits of Physical Education Methodology, an 18-credit Education Core sequence, and 8 credits in biology. Health certification may be obtained with additional health content courses. Teacher Certification students must achieve the minimum grade C– or better in all PED courses.

Health Studies
Health Studies focuses on the role of education in the school system and in community health agencies to teach skills that will enhance the quality of life. Its programs emphasize the interaction of professionals beyond the school setting, including the home, community and worksite.

Physical Education and Human Performance Science
Physical Education prepares students to works with a wide range of populations from children to seniors, including individuals with disabilities. Students use exercise, sports, games and dance to develop programs that promote a healthy lifestyle at every age. Human Performance Science emphasizes the role of physical activity in disease prevention and rehabilitation. Students learn to design and implement effective exercise intervention programs that include adult fitness and cardiac rehabilitation.

Exercise Science
The Department of Health Studies, Physical Education and Human Performance Science also offers undergraduate and graduate programs in Exercise Science. The Bachelor of Science in Exercise Science does not lead to teacher certification but instead to alternative career options. Specialized tracks include fitness specialization, pre-physical therapy and exercise science. The Master of Science in Exercise Science is designed to prepare students to work with a wide variety of populations including high level and recreational athletes as well as people who are diagnosed with cardiovascular, pulmonary, neurological, orthopedic, and metabolic problems.

Sport Management
The Department also offers undergraduate and graduate programs in Sport Management. The Bachelor of Science in Sport Management does not lead to teacher certification but instead to alternative career options. Specialized tracks in sport management include sport marketing and business and sport and media with communications. In the Master of Science in Sport Management, specialized tracks include sport marketing, sport communication and athletic leadership/administration.
