History of the Department

1885
William G. Anderson, M.D., Director of Physical Training at Adelphi Academy called a meeting of professionals that led to the founding of the National Association AAHPERD.


1896
Adelphi College opens. First faculty member was professor of physical culture, Henry S. Petit, M.D.


1916
Women's athletics begins competition in basketball.


1929
Adelphi College moves to Garden City. Woodruff Hall, previously known as the R building, was considered one of the finest gymnasiums in the metropolitan area with an indoor swimming pool, indoor track, squash courts, and handball facilities.


1936
Arvilla E. Nolan, a recent graduate of Wellsley College, joins department.


1938
Ruth St. Denis is appointed chair of the Dance Department, the first Dance Department in the U.S.


1939
A.E. Nolan is appointed chair of the Physical Education Department.


1944
Ruth Skinner, a recent graduate of Adelphi College, is appointed instructor.


1946
Following WWII, men re-admitted to Adelphi College. Men's athletics established with Bill Altenburg as its first director.


1948
Program in teacher training in physical education approved by the University and the State Education Department. All classes are co-educational. One of the first in the country.


1950
First physical education majors graduate.


1966
Gerald Edwards appointed Chair of the Department of Health, Physical Education, and Athletics.


1967
Adelphi boasts the first Master's Degree Program on Long Island.


1972
Physical Education, Health, and Athletics separate.


1974
Ron Feingold is appointed Chair of the Physical Education Department.


1976
Institute for Sports Medicine and Fitness established 1970s programs in Exercise Physiology, Special Physical Education, and Sports Management. All were the first in the Metro area.


1978
Adelphi began Youth Sport Program with Queens. The program has received national recognition and was recently reported in Sports Illustrated (1988).


1980
Eastern Regional Training Center for the American College of Sports Medicine convenes.


1982
Department name is changed to the Department of Physical Education and Human Performance Science.


1985
The International Conference for higher education (AIESEP) is held at Adelphi, commemorating the founding of the National Association. Over thirty countries were represented at the conference.


1986
The Exercise Physiology Program is ranked #5 by the American College of Sports Medicine.


1986
The department is elected to the AIESEP International Board, only of sixteen institutions in the world given this honor.


1987
One of twelve model programs reported in Physical Education Text.


1988
Recieved the AIESEP International Award, presented in Lisbon, Portugal.


1990
Re-elected to the AIESEP International Board, England.


1991
The department moves to the Ruth S. Ammon School of Education.


1992
Health Studies rejoins the department after twenty year separation.


1992
Support PE is established with over fifty school districts networked, Leah Fiorentino serving as director of this model program for the state.


1994
Faculty provides workshops for school districts on the new state "Compact for Learning" initiative. Forty-five from Nassau and Fifty-five school districts from Suffolk county attended the two day workshop.


1994
Re-elected to AIESEP Board, Berlin.


1994
Disabilities Program is established, the "Infusion model" is the first of its kind in the country.


1995
Twenty students and seven faculty attend AIESEP Conference in Israel, with Feingold serving as the keynote, Cagigal lecturer.


1995
School Network adds Health Education.


1996
Alumni of Distinction Award is established, with Zvi Artzi, rector at Zinman College,Wingate, Israel; Frann Vettor, Atlanta Olympic Committee; Connie Hayes, Disney Teacher of the Year; Cecil Watkins, NBA Community Relations.


1997
Multi-disciplinary Aging Program is established with Social Work, Nursing, Speech, and Biology, and Psychology.


1998
AIESEP World Congress.
