The Health Studies program culminates in course HED 538, the required student teaching module. Placement is full-time, five days a week for 16 weeks. Students must apply for student teaching.
Students spend eight weeks in a K-6 setting and another eight weeks in a 7-12 setting. They work under the supervision of a professor and are also assigned a teacher in the school who works with them throughout the eight-week period.
Students are expected to incorporate the skills and training learned over the course of the program. Emphasis is placed on:
- implementing innovative teaching approaches
- developing curriculum appropriate to the group
- planning and executing instructional activities
- creating productive learning environments
- monitoring and assessing student learning.
Each eight-week assignment earns three credit hours.
