This web page is being reviewed and is expected to be updated for the Fall 2009 semester. In the meantime, please contact the department's administrative office for updates about academic requirements. Applications are reviewed by the Health Studies Graduate Committee. All applicants must:
- submit a formal application to the Adelphi University Graduate Admissions Office
- show evidence of having completed an appropriate undergraduate course of study with a cumulative GPA of 2.75 or better to become a degree candidate to the program.
Provisional Status Applicants with a cumulative GPA of 2.5 to 2.74 can apply for admission as provisional students. To attain permanent degree status, students must maintain a B or better average and/or at least three B range grades, with no grades less than a C in the first four core courses.
Three of the four core courses are mandatory. Students may choose from:
| HED 601 |
|
Contemporary Health Issues |
| HED 602 |
Research and Technology in Health Education |
| HED 603 |
Mind/Body Dimensions in Health |
| HED 607 |
Health Promotion for Children and Adolescents |
| HED 650 |
Health and Cultural Diversity |
Students who do not achieve the necessary GPA will not be allowed to continue in the program, unless they can present evidence of extenuating circumstances to the graduate committee.
Non-Matriculated Students
Students who do not have a satisfactory cumulative average, may be admitted as non-matriculated students if they demonstrate potential for success. These students may be allowed to take two of the following four courses:
| HED 601 |
|
Contemporary Health Issues |
| HED 602 |
Research and Technology in Health Education |
| HED 603 |
Mind/Body Dimensions in Health |
| HED 607 |
Health Promotion for Children and Adolescents |
| HED 650 |
Health and Cultural Diversity |
Students achieving a B or better average with no grade less than a C, may be reconsidered for entry with provisional status. Non-matriculated students who do not earn the required grades will not be allowed to register for any additional courses and will be advised to seek graduate study elsewhere. However, non-matriculated students may reapply to the program.
Department Policy on Grades
All students must have a 3.0 grade-point average in order to graduate.
Any student who receives a grade in the C range will be placed on departmental probation. Three C range grades or an F usually results in dismissal from the program unless the student can demonstrate extenuating circumstances to the Graduate Committee that would allow for a reconsideration of status.
