Fieldwork: Participation/Observation

All Adelphi University education majors are required to complete a minimum of 100 hours of fieldwork prior to the student teaching experience. Fieldwork is required for all methods courses and usually requires a minimum of 25 hours per course.

The Fieldwork Experience

Fieldwork experience bridges the gap between theory and practice. It provides the student with the opportunity to visit local schools to enhance his or her knowledge of the teaching and learning process as a participant-observer. This is an introductory classroom experience in the student’s area of certification which permits the student to examine the student-teacher relationship and the role of teacher within the context of the classroom, school and community. Students will be able to gather and analyze data, assist, co-teach, work with an individual student or with small groups, design lessons and assess student performance. In addition, many courses may also have their own specific requirements for this experience, which will be explained in the course syllabus. Students must document all field experiences with a work log submitted to the professor at the conclusion of the course, as it is an integral part of the grade for the methods course.

Fieldwork is completed at sites arranged in conjunction with the methods courses. Students schedule their visits to meet their needs and those of the schools. Students are not free to secure their own field placements without the knowledge and consent of the Office of Fieldwork; formal arrangements must be made for a student’s presence in a school. It is advisable that students have their fingerprints taken prior to undertaking the fieldwork.

Fieldwork Application

In order to be appropriately placed in a timely manner, students must submit applications one semester prior to the actual fieldwork requirement. Late submission of this form will make placements difficult to arrange at short notice.

Application Deadlines
Applications are due as follows:

Fall course work: April 1 (for following semester)
Spring course work: November 1 (for following semester)

Both the regular placement and the special placement applications are dowloadable. Completed forms must be submitted directly to Room 122 in Harvey Hall.

The Application Process
Applications are available online and in the office of Harvey Hall Room 122 at any time.

  • Regular placement (PDF 56KB) requests are forwarded to school districts as they are received after the submission deadline. Once requests are made of schools, students should not seek their own special placements, nor can multiple requests be forwarded to the same districts. Once confirmed, placements cannot be changed.
  • Special placement (PDF 56KB) applications are to be used ONLY if the student has a guaranteed placement within a school that meets the fieldwork course subject and level requirements. A letter of verification of this special placement on official letterhead from the school or district is required before a student’s placement will be confirmed and approved.
  • Failure to file an application for either a regular or special placement will result in inaccurate or missing data in a student’s records.
  • In compliance with NYSED mandates, all students must have at least one diverse and/or high-needs placement. This is generally accomplished during the first fieldwork experience and can either be a self-placement or arranged through the Fieldwork Office.
  • Questions regarding fieldwork placements can be directed to Roellyn Armstrong at 516.877.4068 or email at armstrong@adelphi.edu.
  • Refer also to the Participant Observer Handbook (PDF 284KB), downloadable here or available in printed format in Harvey Hall, Room 111 or 122.
