Scholars Teacher Education Program | STEP Childhood Education
Plan of Study

To be taken in conjunction with a liberal arts major

Students in the STEP childhood education sequence must major in one of the liberal arts and sciences and complete the University General Education requirements. Please note: All liberal arts majors with the exception of dance are acceptable majors.

Note: Students admitted into STEP taking a Bachelor of Arts (BA) major up until Fall 2011 must complete Level III foreign language through the Department of Languages. Transfer students accepted into the STEP program are exempt from the new requirements in foreign language until Fall 2011. All students receiving teacher certification in New York State must have demonstrated foreign language proficiency at the equivalent level of a Regents examination (Level II).

New York State Teacher Certification Requirements

  1. Science
    A 4-credit laboratory science course.

  2. Foreign Language (American Sign Language is acceptable)
    1. Two semesters at Level I and II (e.g. Spanish I and II - 6 credits)
      or
    2. Two different languages (e.g. Spanish I and American Sign Language I - 6 credits)
      or
    3. One semester of Level III or above (e.g. Spanish III or above - 3 credits)
      or
    4. Requirement can be waived with a passing grade on High School Regents.

Assessment Points

Assessment Point 1: Admissions: INDUCTION

  1. High School GPA > 3.0
  2. High School SAT > 1500 (combined)
  3. Adelphi GPA > 2.75

Assessment Point 2: Knowledge and Disposition: EXPLORATION
To be included in Portfolio:

  1. Autobiography (from 0836-304)
  2. Philosophy of Education (from 0836-307)
  3. Assessment Case Study (from 0836-306)

Assessment Point 3: Field Performance Benchmarks: SYNTHESIS
Field performance benchmarks will be required in all methods courses. Students will choose a minimum of two samples each of a unit of study/fieldwork project and performance evaluation.

To be included in Portfolio:

  1. Two Lesson Plans
  2. Two Units of Study/Fieldwork Project
  3. Two Performance Evaluations
  4. Capstone and Reflective Letter (from 0807-825)

To be included in student's file:

  1. Passing score on:
    1. L.A.S.T.
    2. ATS-W
    3. C.S.T.

All exams must be passed prior to internship or student teaching.
