Those candidates completing the program of study will be recommended for certification as a literacy specialist, for birth through grade 6 and Grades 5-12 (42 credits); birth through grade 6 (36 credits); or grade 5 through grade 12 (36 credits).
As a part of program requirements, candidates will be introduced to the development of a professional standards-based electronic portfolio. This portfolio will be maintained throughout the program by the candidate and will result in a summative literacy portfolio submitted as part of ELY 810 Literacy and Research Inquiry II.

As part of Adelphi's continuing commitment to its extended community, the Center for Literacy and Learning offers affordable diagnostic evaluations and individual or group instruction under the auspices of New York State certified teachers. The Center provides an essential practicum component for students pursuing an M.S. in Literacy. Working under faculty supervision, students can refine their skills in assessing and addressing the literacy needs of children.
Students are expected to complete two semesters of a supervised practicum in order to qualify for certification. Practicum courses may not be waived.
Admission to this program requires New York State teaching certification.
