Introduction |
The School of Education takes a dual approach to supporting educators and the community in their efforts to promote literacy. The School offers the M.S. Program in Literacy to address the needs of students and teachers in diverse communities. The Center for Literacy offers candidates practical experience in assessing the literacy needs of students, and the opportunity to instruct those students in a university setting under faculty supervision. This meets the practicum certification requirements mandated by New York State Department of Education.
The M.S. in Literacy combines scholarship and practice in school and community settings to train literacy specialists and prepare them for leadership roles. The program will enhance the professional preparation of classroom teachers, interventional literacy teachers, clinicians, supervisors, and directors or coordinators of literacy in school districts. Completion of the program leads to New York State certification as a Literacy Specialist.
The Literacy specialist preparation program was recently awarded national recognition by the International Reading Association.
Completion of the program will lead to certification as a New York State Literacy Specialist in one of the following areas:
M.S. in Literacy Birth-Grade 6 (36 credits)
M.S. in Literacy Grades 5-12 (36 credits)
M.S. in Literacy Birth-Grade 12 (42 credits)
Advanced Literacy Certification Birth-Grade 6 (18 credits)
Advanced Literacy Certification Grades 5-12 (18 credits)
Advanced Literacy Certification Birth-Grade 12 (24 credits)

As part of Adelphi's continuing commitment to its extended community, the Center for Literacy and Learning offers affordable diagnostic evaluations and individual or group instruction under the auspices of New York State certified teachers. The Center provides an essential practicum component for students pursuing an M.S. in Literacy. Working under faculty supervision, students can refine their skills in assessing and addressing the literacy needs of children.
Students are expected to complete two semesters of a supervised practicum in order to qualify for certification. Practicum courses may not be waived.
As part of the program requirements, students will develop a professional standards-based electronic portfolio. Students will be expected to maintain the portfolio throughout their course of study and will be required to submit it as part of ELY 810 Literacy and Research Inquiry II.
Admission to this program requires New York State teaching certification. |
