General Requirements
Orientation

All entering students are required to attend an initial Orientation Meeting or meet/speak with a Program Adviser. Orientation meetings are held prior to the start of Cycle I for fall courses.

Additional Required Seminars
Students in New York State Educational Certification Programs are required to attend a Seminar on Child Abuse and a Seminar on Violence Prevention. Seminars are offered throughout the year; they are 2 hours in duration. Please check official University Bulletin for dates and times.

Residency Requirement
Students must take 30 credits of the 36 credit Master's Degree program at Adelphi University in order to receive the degree. Students must take all 30 credits or all 15 credits of the Certificate Sequences at Adelphi University in order to obtain the required certificate.

Continuous Matriculation
Students must maintain continuous matriculation by registering for at least 1 course (3 credits) in a given semester. If a student drops out for one semester, the student will no longer be considered on active status. If the student remains inactive for a year, the student will have to reapply to the program and comply with any new admissions requirements that are in effect at the time of reapplication.

Grading Policy
Students must maintain a B (3.0) average. If a C+ grade (or lower) is received in any course, a warning letter is sent to the student. Upon receiving, a second warning letter, the student is placed on academic probation and blocked from further registration until receiving academic clearance. Upon receiving, a third warning letter, the student will be dismissed.

Admission Requirements
Admission requirements vary and are detailed along with each program.

Pending Admissions
Sometimes students experience delays in securing transcripts and recommendation letters. While the Graduate Admissions Office awaits final transcripts or recommendation letters, students may register for one cycle in the Fall (Cycle I or Cycle II) on a pending admissions basis.
  • Students can register for 3 to 6 credits in one cycle. The Fall semester extends from September through the beginning of January; this is sufficient time to secure the proper documentation (transcripts and 2 recommendation letters).
  • Pending admissions students may register for foundation courses only; they may not register for any advanced courses nor may pending admissions students register for field-based courses or the administrative internship.
  • After registering in the required Fall semester cycle, the student will be blocked from registering for further courses until all documents (transcripts/recommendation letters) are received and full acceptance is attained.
  • Students on a pending admissions basis will not be allowed to enter or take courses in Cycle III or IV.
  • Students on a pending admissions basis are not considered accepted students and so cannot apply for financial aid or loans.
  • Under no circumstances will students be allowed to register for any class on a pending admissions basis without submitting an application or verification letter documenting 3 years full time K-12 teaching or school experience in a pupil personnel service profession.
  • Students on a pending admissions basis are required to sign a waiver form that stipulates that taking courses does not guarantee acceptance to the program. If the student is not fully accepted in the program, after one semester, the student will be blocked from further registration.

Transfer or Waiver of Graduate Credits
In very special and rare circumstances, graduate transfer credits from another University or another unit at Adelphi University may be applied to the Educational Leadership and Technology (EDL) Master's Degree program.
  • A maximum of 6 graduate credits may be transferred provided the course is the same in content and requirements as the course outlined in the EDL Program.
  • Students may not transfer courses into the EDL program if the student applied those courses and received a previous degree.
  • Transfer courses must have been taken prior to entering the EDL program.
  • Courses cannot be transferred into the Certificate Programs.
  • If a particular course is waived because the student took a similar course, the course must be substituted with another graduate level course from the School of Education.
  • A grade of B or better must be received in the designated transfer/waived and substituted course.
  • Students must fill out and submit a transfer/waiver petition form. Course transcripts, course descriptions, course outline and a course syllabus must be attached to this official transfer/petition form. This form and the attached documents should then be submitted to the attention of Office of Records/School of Education, Garden City Campus, 516.877.4084.

Tuition Payment Options - Financial Aid
Courses must be paid for before a registration will be cleared. Adelphi University accepts check or credit card payments. Students may also apply for an Extended Payment Option and pay their tuition over 2 installments in a cycle or semester .

If your School or District will be paying your tuition, a purchase order or letter of intent must be filed with the Office of Student Financial Services, Division of Special Billing, before the start of classes. A designated school/district officer must on official school/district letterhead stationary sign this purchase order or letter of intent so that the student will be cleared for registration.

If payment or intent of payment is not approved beforehand, the student will not be considered registered. Students who do not appear on the class roster are not considered registered and will be asked to leave the class. Students will not be allowed to sit in on the class if they do not appear on the class roster.

Students may also be eligible for financial aid with a federal student loan provided they are fully accepted matriculated students. Students may apply for a federal student loan directly on line. Students should file for full time status if they will be taking 6 credits a cycle and part-time status if they will be taking 3 credits a cycle. You are expected to comply with the Student Financial Aid office in meeting all requirements.

Please note: Students on a Pending Admissions status cannot apply for financial aid.
