B.A. in Communication Disorders |
Introduction The Bachelor of Arts in Communication Disorders provides professional training in speech-language pathology and audiology within a strong liberal arts framework. Students acquire a basic knowledge of the speech, language, and hearing sciences.
Courses fulfill certain of the academic and practicum requirements for clinical certification from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA). The undergraduate program also meets the core requirements for admission to graduate school.
Students may select additional courses leading to New York State Certification as a Teacher of Students with Speech and Language Disabilities (TSSLD). However, student teaching is required for certification and is only offered at the graduate level.
The plan of study consists of a sequence of required courses. Students majoring in communication disorders must complete:
- 45 credits in speech
- 6-8 credits in physical and biological sciences
- 18 credits in interdepartmental requirements.

Program Requirements
Students must maintain a minimum overall GPA of 2.75. If a student's GPA falls below 2.75, the student will be placed on academic probation for one semester. Failure to earn a 2.75 GPA by the end of the probationary semester will result in dismissal from the program.
If a student earns two grades of C+ or lower in the first 15 credits of the major's SPE courses, the student will be dismissed from the program.
If a student earns a third C (beyond the first 15 credits of SPE courses), the student will be required to retake that course until a grade of B- or better is earned.
Students receiving an F in any major course, at any time, will be dismissed from the program.
Transfer students may be required to take one or more additional semesters of study.
Required courses may not be taken Pass/Fail.
