Communication Sciences & Disorders

The Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders offers four degree programs that prepare students for professional licensure, teaching, and leadership roles. The courses combine academic studies and clinical experiences that instill a respect and understanding of the nature of communication disabilities across all age, economic, and ethnic groups.

The four degree programs include:

The undergraduate program is designed to prepare students for graduate school in speech-language pathology, audiology, and speech and hearing science. In addition to pre-professional preparation, academic coursework and clinical experiences are designed to help our students develop respect and awe for the complexity of the human body and the child’s ability to acquire communication skills and to understand the nature of communication disabilities across the lifespan and their effect on humanity.

Our two doctoral programs prepare students for roles as teachers, scholars, professionals, and administrators. The curricula are guided by our strong belief that doctoral candidates must learn how to synthesize the literature, ask relevant new questions, and develop and implement methodologies to discover and report new findings.

The mission of the Department of Communication Sciences & Disorders (CSD), Master of Science (MS) program in Speech-Language Pathology is to provide students with a strong understanding of the connections between the scientific bases of our discipline and its clinical practices. We strive to prepare the finest professional and ethical research-based clinicians who can assess and treat children and adults with communication disorders within our scope of practice and from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds.

The Department's mission supports the School of Education's six core values: scholarship, reflective practice, social justice, inclusive communities, wellness, and creativity.

The master's programs meet the academic and clinical requirements for New York State licensure in speech-language pathology or audiology and the Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC) awarded by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA).

The department also offers classes that meet the New York State requirements for certification as a Teacher of Students with Speech-Language Disabilities (TSSLD) and the Bilingual Extension to the TSSLD.

The M.S. program in Speech-Language Pathology is accredited by the Council on Academic Accreditation (CAA) of the American Speech-Language Hearing Association (ASHA). Accreditation for the Au.D. program is pending.
