Keynote Speaker: Temple Grandin, Ph.D.
Developing Talents in Individuals with Autism
Dr. Temple Grandin is an autism legend and inspiration to thousands! Diagnosed at age two, at a time when little was known about autism, her future was bleak. Yet with intensive intervention by family and school she went on to become the world's foremost expert on livestock handling.
Through experimentation with ways to lessen her own anxiety she developed the ‘squeeze machine’ and a more humane way of handling cattle. Dr. Grandin is an Associate Professor of Animal Sciences at Colorado State University. She has designed one-third of all the livestock-handling facilities in the United States and is the author of numerous books; Emergence: Labeled Autistic, Thinking in Pictures, The Unwritten Rules of Social Relationships: Decoding Social Mysteries Through the Unique Perspectives of Autism (with Sean Barron), Animals in Translation: Using the Mysteries of Autism to Decode Animal Behavior, Developing Talents: Careers for Individuals with Asperger Syndrome and High Functioning Autism and The Way I See It: A Personal Look at Autism and Asperger’s.
She lectures internationally on the subject of autism spectrum disorders. Dr. Grandin received a B.A. in Psychology from Franklin Pierce College, an M.A. from Arizona State and a Ph.D. from the University of Illinois. Dr. Grandin provides tremendous insight into the way individuals on the spectrum experience the world around them. We are proud that she is a member of the AHA Association advisory board.
