June 18, 2013–Adelphi University President Dr. Robert A. Scott has appointed Danny McCabe to become the next Director of Athletics and Campus Recreation at Adelphi, effective July 8, 2013.  Mr. McCabe succeeds Robert Hartwell who announced his retirement earlier this spring after serving in this role with distinction for 26 years.

McCabe comes to Adelphi from Hofstra University, where he was a part of the Pride Intercollegiate Athletic program for the past eight years, most recently as Executive Associate Athletic Director.  He played a pivotal role in the day-to-day operation of the department and in that role McCabe spearheaded Hofstra’s NCAA Certification process, and played a large role in developing and implementing the University’s five-year plan for athletics. He also served as the chairman of the NCAA Lacrosse Quarterfinals Organizing Committee at Hofstra in 2009 and 2011.

“Mr. McCabe adds further distinction to our athletics, intramural, and recreation programs.  This is an especially exciting time to be part of Panther Athletics as we just captured our first NE-10 President’s Cup since joining the conference in 2009,” said Adelphi University President Robert A. Scott. “Panther Athletics is poised to continue this success and Mr. McCabe’s experience adds additional depth to our program. As Athletic Director, he will continue to foster our sustained focus on Division II’s core value of a commitment to the student athlete. I am pleased to welcome him to the Adelphi family.”

In addition, McCabe served as the program administrator for the men’s and women’s basketball, men’s lacrosse, volleyball and the men’s soccer program and had oversight responsibilities for the sports medicine and strength and conditioning departments.

“I look forward to working with the Adelphi community, alumni and program supporters. I would also like to thank President Scott, Dr. Lauren Mounty, and the committee for their support and confidence as we embark on an exciting time in Adelphi Athletics history,” stated McCabe. “I am truly inspired by Adelphi University and its commitment to the complete student-athlete and I am excited about the opportunity to continue to stress the importance of having Adelphi act as a leader in the Northeast-10 and Division II on the field of play and in the classroom.”

Prior to Hofstra, McCabe was at Providence College where he served as Associate Director of Athletics for External Relations from 2000-05. In that capacity, he managed all athletic department marketing, promotions and sales strategies for the Big East institution. Under his guidance, the College experienced increased sponsorship sales and ticket sales and increased the average attendance at Friar men’s basketball games.  McCabe also oversaw the Providence Athletic Ticket Office, managed their collegiate licensing program increasing revenue by 133 percent, and worked with the Director of Athletics in the department’s fundraising program.

“Panther Athletics and campus recreation are essential attributes of the Adelphi University student experience adding significantly to the vibrancy of campus life,” said Vice President for Enrollment Management and Student Success Dr. Lauren Mounty who oversees the Department. “Danny’s commitment to community engagement, both on campus and in the region will extend Adelphi’s reach and reputation.”

Before his time at Providence, McCabe served as the University of Miami (FL) Director of Ticket Sales from 1998 to 2000. At Miami, he handled season ticket and group ticket sales strategies for the Hurricane’s football, baseball, and men’s and women’s basketball programs.

McCabe also spent time in leadership roles in the marketing departments at both Fairfield University (1994-98) and Fordham University (1991-92). A 1991 graduate of Providence College with a bachelor’s degree in business administration, McCabe earned a M.B.A. degree from Fairfield University in 2004.
