Born and raised in New Hyde Park, New York, Joseph Weiss wanted to attend a college or university in the region. Adelphi was his school of choice. “With my twin brother and me going to school at the same time, my parents couldn’t afford us dorming. This narrowed down my options to mainly local schools,” he said. “On top of that, I wanted to try to lighten the load as much as possible for my parents in terms of tuition money. Adelphi’s tuition was one of the lower ones, if not the lowest.”

“I also got the biggest scholarship from Adelphi,” said Mr. Weiss, who is a recipient of Adelphi’s Provost Scholarship, awarded to students with excellent academic performance and co-curricular activities.

Being a scholarship recipient has shaped his overall experience at Adelphi. “I know Adelphi expects a certain level of academic performance and involvement from me as a scholarship recipient,” says Mr. Weiss, who is a member of a fraternity, student government, and the University’s newspaper, among other organizations across campus.

“As a commuter student I never imagined myself getting sucked into the school the way I have been. Through work, my fraternity, and the organizations I’m involved in, I now care about every aspect of Adelphi: how it’s run, how my career here is progressing, and the people I’ve met and continue to meet.”

Currently a junior at Adelphi, Mr. Weiss has declared sport management as his major. With biology, chemistry and a number of other science and sports-related courses already completed, he is looking forward to the business requirements of the major. “I’m excited about the business classes,” he said. “Science is straight facts. Business is learning about people. It’s a whole different kind of learning.”

“With the support I’m receiving from Adelphi and what my parents are helping pay, hopefully I won’t have any debt coming out of college, which would be outstanding given the position so many other students are in across the country,” he said. “I’m proud to have been given this honor from Adelphi…and I’m very thankful.”
