| Jane Ashdown |
Welcome to new and returning students as you begin the 2009-10 academic year. Our mission is to prepare you with the knowledge and understanding and the skills and techniques needed to be effective professionals in your chosen field.
The Ruth S. Ammon School of Education is named after a classroom teacher, the mother of Carol Ammon, a member of the University’s Board of Trustees. It is fitting that the School is named after someone who was close to the practice of teaching. Excellence in clinical practice is a hallmark of the work of our faculty and students. From the Alice Brown Early Learning Center, the Hy Weinberg Center for Communication Disorders, the Institute for Parenting, the Center for Literacy Studies, our Model Program for student teaching, the Adult Fitness Program, and our many affiliations with public schools, hospitals and clinics, you will have a wealth of opportunities to engage with real world practice and be guided by expert faculty in learning from those experiences.
Many of our distinguished faculty are recognized leaders in teaching and research at the state, national and international levels in their respective fields. They value learning through meaningful activity and this is demonstrated in their course teaching and their interactions with their students. Our faculty promote a deep understanding of the scientific bases of their disciplines and the clinical practices that professionals need in the field. This is all undertaken with a strong focus on values, ethics, and an understanding of cultural and linguistic diversity that is so important for becoming an effective professional in one of the many fields at the heart of the School of Education’s offerings.
I look forward to meeting you while you study with us. Please feel free to stop by my office in Room 112 in Harvey Hall or email me at JAshdown@adelphi.edu
